Valkyrie Service Day: Honoring Kenzie Through Community Service

Valkyrie Service Day is a nationwide movement dedicated to community service, where scouting units and local organizations come together to do a good turn in memory of Bel Air Scout Mackenzie Opdyke.

Troop 1920 hosted its third annual Valkyrie Service Day at Shamrock Park in Bel Air on Saturday, Nov. 8. More than 300 volunteers gathered for the event, joining forces to honor 10‑year‑old Scout Mackenzie “Kenzie” Opdyke, who passed away in 2023 after her courageous battle with brain cancer.

Throughout the morning, volunteers spread out across the park and surrounding areas to pick up litter, clear debris, and help restore the town for the entire community to enjoy. Scouts of all ages worked side by side, demonstrating teamwork, leadership, and a shared commitment to service.

Valkyrie Service Day encourages families and scouts to give back in meaningful ways, reflecting the kindness, strength, and bright spirit that Kenzie brought to everyone around her. This tradition continues to honor her legacy and the values she embodied.

Kenzie will always be in our hearts.
